Examination of the temporomandibular joint

We examine the temporomandibular joint using the same criteria as an orthopaedic surgeon would any other joint. The reason the techniques may seem new and unfamiliar is that as dentists we only have jurisdiction over one joint - the temporomandibular joint.

We will examine...

  1. Tenderness to palpation
  2. Joint sounds
  3. Range of motion

Range of movement

Examination of the articulatory system should include

Range of movement
TMJ tenderness
TMJ sounds
TMJ locking
Muscle tenderness
Signs of bruxism
Headache experience
